Sea-to-Sky Highway: make Highway 99 part of the trip
The Vancouver-to-Whistler road is not simply a transfer. Plan the timing, stops and road checks well, and it becomes one of the strongest days of the itinerary.

What makes the drive different
The route changes character several times. Metro Vancouver gives way to the North Shore, then the highway follows Howe Sound with steep mountains rising from the coast. At Squamish the landscape turns more alpine, and the road continues through the Coast Mountains toward Whistler.
That geography is why a two-hour navigation estimate is not a good itinerary. Traffic, viewpoints, weather, road work and stops all add variability. If the scenery matters to you, leave during daylight and make the drive part of the day.
Drive it in chapters
Vancouver → Horseshoe Bay
Urban departure, bridges and North Shore traffic. This is often the least predictable portion during busy periods.
Horseshoe Bay → Britannia Beach
The coastal road opens toward Howe Sound. Do not rely on this section for fuel; Tourism Squamish notes no gas stations between Horseshoe Bay and Squamish.
Britannia Beach → Squamish
Major scenic stops become more frequent, including Shannon Falls and the Sea to Sky Gondola area.
Squamish → Whistler
The route leaves the fjord environment and climbs deeper into the Coast Mountains, with parks and trail access along Highway 99.
The road is scenic enough to deserve daylight
If your first view of Howe Sound happens in darkness because the itinerary left Vancouver too late, you have traded away part of the trip.

In winter, confirm tire requirements and vehicle equipment. In summer, the constraint is often traffic and parking at popular stops rather than road surface.
